Houston I have Data

I have now recorded my first day of Google Analytics data on my blog.

I had to move my Google analytics code from just before </body> to just after <body>.

The procedure I used:  From my Word Press Dashboard- I scrolled down the left column to the “Appearance” section. I selected “Editor”.

Then from the right column I selected “Header (header.php)”

Scroll down my Header (header.php) display until I found <body>

I moved my cursor just after <body> and pasted my Google Analytics code

Then I selected “Footer (footer.php)” Scrolled to just before </body> and deleted my Google analytics code I had place in there 2 days ago.

Then I clicked “Update File”

Waited 24 hours and found data in my Google Analytics report for the first time.

I took 5 guys out to sea to catch some Red Snapper. The fish were home but were not in a feeding mode. We only caught 11 keepers to 10 lbs. Seas were 1-3 feet.

Snag with Google Analytics

After my 24 hour wait, there was not a Google stat on my blog. When I went to “View” and clicked on “Source”, ah, the code was missing.

Here again I did a little surfing and this is what I found:

http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Use_Google_Analytics_for_Beginners

This was a super find. I followed the steps given and all appeared to be well.

When I loaded my blog again, went to “View” and clicked “Source”. I then scrolled to the bottom of the page. Everything looked ok but down on the very bottom on the display after “Done” it had an error message.

Luckily I had saved two versions of my Google Analytics code. I compared them and found I had added a lot of extra code. I deleted the extra code and preformed an update.

NOW, everything is ok.

Lesson learned – always copy the original code before you make any changes. That way at least you can restore to original code.

The Red Snapper get another days rest with 8.4 ft. seas. Instead of fishing my clients went to Mexico shopping.

I Added Google Analytics

Today I added Google Analytics to this page in anticipation of getting a visitor.

So, if you have been lurking on this page, please leave your comments or questions.

I hope to make this blog a hub to all of my web sites.

My oldest web site is www.geauxdeep.com was created to help advertise my charter business.

My newest site www.make-internet-marketing-work.com , I am building as a student project with Alex Jeffreys. Alex is mentoring me on how to set up a business system for internet marketing.

What I am learning from Alex and my fellow students I am applying to what I love the most.  I  consider myself a subject matter expert on  fishing, www.how-to-catch-fish.com.  This site will be a place where folks can come and share their favorite fish story, ask questions and learn from the experiences of others.

I remember what Alex said. There are three types of people:

  1. People that make mistakes and never learn.
  2. People that learn from their mistakes.
  3. People that learn from other people’s mistakes.

When we share our experiences with others we can learn from their mistakes and they can learn from ours.

The Red Snapper got another break today. I had to cancel a charter today because seas were at 6.5 feet with a period of 6 seconds.

Eureka !  My PPP is ON-Line

I have to share with the Famous 500 (Alex’s Jeffreys Students) how I learned to set up FileZilla.

FileZilla is free software that allows you to upload your web pages from your computer (client) to the Internet (your host server).

After some web surfing I found this site:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VROIq95utWs

I completely did a FileZilla uninstall. Then I did a new install.

I followed the video with a stop and go procedure and duplicated every step.

The only hitch was getting the filename correct in the top right box.

This is Christmas day so I am grilling Red Snapper today.

PPP Status

I worked on my PPP for a couple of hours. I am stopped at the FTP part and working with FileZilla.

I am reading the guide that was downloaded with it.

The first achievement will be to get a connection to my FTP server.

Next comes navigating on the server and finally transferring files.

Hopefully my PPP will be up and running soon.

The Red Snappers got a break today the seas were around 12 feet.

Alex  Jeffreys’

6 ½ Hour Brainstorming Session

I lurked for 6 ½ hours yesterday afternoon and listen to a world wide group of Alex Jeffreys’ students critique each other’s Blog.

The number one fault seems to be the calendar block on the front page. No one could offer a good reason why it was there and what value it added to that person’s blog. So, remove it!

I may have learned why my blog content was not transferring when uploading from WordPress to my HostGator account.

Several of the other folks seem to have a similar problem. It appears when using the Windows Internet Explorer browser the content would get lost.

If the Firefox browser was used the content came up and was not lost.

The next item high on the list was the ‘Header” on the blogs. It was the opinion of the group Headers should be of simple design. The simple design keeps your blog visitor focused on the blog content and not the Header.

The next item was the color of the blog’s back ground.   The group felt that black print on a white back ground made for an easier read.

Our next session with Alex will be in January 2009.

That gives me time to tweak my blog, include some of Alex’s traffic pulling techniques,  work on my PPP, and catch a few more Red Snapper.

I struggled transferring my WordPress blog to my captainhall.com web site. The problem  was I would get it to load but odd characters would show up in my header. Also my content would not transfer.

I deleted my first Blog file and followed Dean Holland’s eBook the second time with the same results. I also noticed what I believed to be a WordPress upload counter that was set to 3. After my second attempt the counter read 2/3.

I sent out a couple of request to fellow students for assistance. The only two people replied one  was Nadav Saltsman. He offered words of encouragement and has a impressive Blog http://nsaltsman.com/. This guy impresses an old sea Captain 50 years his senior.

Fearing that if I tried something else it my be my third strike because the suspected counter was readind 2/3. I submitted a trouble ticket requesting assistance with marketingwithalex. I received a response back recommending two avenues one was to download Dean Holland’s eBook and the other was to go to http://www.blogtactics.com. That is Matt Garrett’s web site.

Knowing that the definition of idiot is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result each time. I followed Dean’s  procedure 2 times and don’t expect a different result if I did it the third time. Dean’s blog set up guide did not work for me. I suspect the problem may be a font problem I just don’t know. Anyway I chose to try Matt’s video. The reason being is that I had already given Dean’s procedure two tries at it and I am a visual type person. I like videos and flow charts when following procedures for the first time.

I downloaded Matt’s video and I had my WordPress Blog Active. I would start the video and when an instruction was completed I stopped the video and made the keystrokes into the WordPress page. I repeated this procedure until completion.

I changed the font I was using and used the same font as Matt. The Blog transferred clean with no strange characters in the Header. However, the data still did not transfer. At this point I just did a copy and paste.

I believe my www.captainhall.com Blog to be crude but functional. My plan is to learn how to dress it up a little. If I could get my Blog to look like Nadav’s Blog I would be as happy as a dead hog lying in the sun.

Can someone help me with setting up a DNS template in www.cheapname.com? Other hosting companies just required me to update my DNS server with my Host Gator pointers.

I do have an open trouble ticket cheapname support.

My First Post

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008
Hi Ya’ll,

Captain Hall here from South Texas in the USA. I operate Geaux Deep Charters www.geauxdeep.com. out of Port Mansfield, TX.

I am very interested in learning Internet Marketing. Because from many years of fishing I have obtained a lot of fishing knowledge and would love to share that knowledge with other interested fishermen.

I am in the process of building a business web site www.how-to-catch-fish.com.

I have had a good webmaster build my www.geauxdeep.com site and he did all of my updates i.e. add fishing reports, fishing tips, new photos etc..

However he is now very ill and only does updates every couple of weeks. So, not wanting to be totally dependent on one person going forward I am trying to learn from the ground up.

Years ago I read a book “The Third Wave” about the coming of the ‘information age’. Well, I have lived through its development and IT has arrived.

About 3 years ago I signed up for a “how to make money over the Internet” course. I received a large note book and 22 CDs. I set through several webinars. However, all that was ever addressed was writing Ezines. I never could see how sending out a weekly Ezine would make me any money. So, I lost interest.

In today’s economic times I have a lot of openings in my charter business so I begin looking into this internet thing again. I spent some money and got some space on PayDotCom.com. Then Mike Filsaime sent me an email about an up coming coaching program (Texas spelling) to be taught by Alex Jeffreys. I listened to Alex’s hype about all of the money he has made and all of the places he has been. That did not impress me because all of the folks that are hawking their products do that. Have you ever seen a fellow trying to sell you something and tell you how poor it was making him.

What did get my attention was Alex’s statements about how Internet Marketing was a business. He identified several components and even explained how the Ezine was a player. All of a sudden the total picture(business model) developed before my very eyes.

He also said a very very important word ‘Mentor’

Will Rogers once said, ” If you think education is expensive, try ignorance”

All through life if I wanted to know how to do something that I did not know how to do I did the following:

 1. I read books and read magazine articles on the subject to gain knowledge.

2. I found the most knowledgeable person on the subject I could and spent some good old show me time with them..

From my experience of learning and gaining knowledge Alex Jeffreys is dead on with his mentoring program. I am very happy to be aligned with Alex Jeffreys.

My pace is more like the tortoise than the hare. However I WILL cross the finish line and join the $1,000,000.00 club.

My second post

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

From December 12, 2008

Today I repaired some fishing equipment, canvassed clients and attended a 3 hour brainstorming session with Alex Jeffreys, my Internet Marketing Mentor, and all of his current students.

I opened a HostGator web hosting account and registered two domains for my profit pulling platform.

I spent two hours playing with WordPress.com and my blog.  I also went through some tutorials on Host Gator on how to transfer my Blog to CaptainHall.com.

First however, I must transfer my name server to HostGator from Omnis Network.  I will do that tomorrow after my 24 hour waiting period.

I have printed out some eBooks and I have a suggestion.

The author had an index with page numbers but the individual pages were not numbered.  When the fan hit them, they scattered across the floor.  It was hell to arrange them in the proper order under those conditions.  I thought, hey, no problem, I’ll just download the eBook again.  Wrong, I get a message that says I have previously downloaded the eBook and No Go.  One page at a time, but I goter done.

I am at a spot where I have set up a special folder for just user names and passwords.

Tomorrow, looks like the seas are down to 2-4 ft. so I’ll spend 5 hr. at sea collecting some more Red Snapper fillets.  Somebody had to do it.

Tight lilnes,

Captain Hall
